Since our <a href=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/ocean-rowing-roundup-for-december-3\/\">last roundup<\/a>, the winner of the 2024-25 World&#8217;s Toughest Row has been crowned. Two soloists are approaching their finish lines, and a new duo has taken to the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Atlantic Ocean\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>World\u2019s Toughest Row:<\/strong> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Possibly the most popular ocean rowing race in the world, the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">World\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Toughest Row (previously the Talisker Whisky Challenge) started on December 11. This year, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">38<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> crews totaling 109 rowers started in Tenerife. T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">oday, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first crew crossed the finish line in Antigua.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Team Row4Cancer won the 2024 race after 37 days, 14 hours, and two minutes at sea. They landed just a few hours ago. The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">four-man<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> crew of Leon Koning, Tom Rijnders, Maarten Diepeveen, and Mark Slats has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">led<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> since the beginning. The four Netherlanders finished<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a full two days ahead of the next closest boat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VynF351Cy60?si=Q9eZ3cqHp1UzoHsy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the third time Mark Slats has taken part<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the Atlantic race.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> In <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2017,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> he broke the solo speed record. In <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2020,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> he did the same in a pair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This year was the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">toughest<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> yet. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Previously<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, easterly winds pushed the crews toward Antigua. This year, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> battled constant headwinds and crosswinds, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">which<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> foiled their hope for a new speed record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> no secret that the team had a record in mind, but sometimes Mother Nature has other <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">plans,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the organizers observed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>An unusual start<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This year&#8217;s conditions were very unusual. The race started <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a day<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> early to give crews a calmer start and allow<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> them to adapt to sea life.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Initially, crews moved swiftly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but progress on the back half was particularly slow, with none of the usually reliable winds<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crews are so spread out that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 2,110km separates the first and last boats in the pack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Race statistics so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Winners: Row4Cancer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading five: Power of 1<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading four: Row4Cancer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading trio: Team V3nture<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading pair: Scholarship<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leading soloist: Ocean Ways<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission Atlantic:<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The smaller of the two Atlantic events, Mission Atlantic involves two teams crossing the ocean from Spain to Barbados. Unlike the World\u2019s Toughest Row,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0where many crews set to break records in their categories, this is not a race. It is an event for active or retired military personnel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">year&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> teams feature Oceans Elite and the Rowing Stones. British pair Chris Thrall and Louie Greenhalgh make up Oceans Elite. Image: Mission Atlantic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Neck and neck<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The larger <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rowing Stones crew are currently second in this non-race, though very little separates the boats. They are just 55km apart. Over the last few days, the Rowing Stones have had issues with their water maker and satellite phone. And in a reversal of the usual expedition problem, they brought too much food rather than too little. T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hey fear the extra weight might be slowing them down a little. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Oceans Elite faces a catastrophe that only we Britons can understand: They have run out of tea bags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zara Lachlan (UK)<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lachlan is the youngest rower to take to the seas <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">this season<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> She is rowing alone from Portugal to French Guiana. If successful,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she will become the youngest person and first woman to row solo and unassisted from mainland Europe to South America. So <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">far,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she has covered 4,170km, about 70% of the distance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;I&#8217;m not an ocean rower&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lachlan modestly says that she does not consider herself an ocean rower, even if she makes it to South America. It took a long time to pull away from the Canary Islands, south of Portugal, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">difficult<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> weather plagued her. She has injured her arm, broken a finger, and capsized. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Luckily,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the row became more enjoyable as she pulled away from the coast and into the open ocean. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">December,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she has doubled her daily mileage. J<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ust a few days ago, she passed a significant milestone: just <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1,000 nautical miles (1,852km) to go.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> She hopes to finish before the end of January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phoenix Expedition<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hungarians Adam Norbert Szabo and Gergo Havasi are rowing from the Canary Islands <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Antigua. They started on January 6 and have covered 1,000km in 11 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Seasickness at night<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">far,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> they have been relatively lucky with the weather. The first few days were calm, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> manageable winds. On their fifth day, their first storm forced them to deploy their para-anchor. They waited out the storm in their cabin, which felt like a washing machine and worsened their early seasickness. After the storm petered <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">out,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> strong winds and large waves lingered for three days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_101801\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101801\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101801\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/473525545_18481077139008718_8046276331020144969_n-e1737154910255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-101801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Gergo Havasi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They are now settling into a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">routine<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> but have found nighttime rowing particularly difficult. It coincides with when their seasickness is at its worst, and the interrupted sleep has caused fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pacific Ocean<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Louis Margot (CH)<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Margot\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Pacific row is just a stage of a much larger project. He is aiming to cycle and row around the world. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is his second rowing leg. On November <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">12,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> he pushed off from Peru bound for Hiva Oa in French <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Polynesia<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
