The 16th-century merchant ship lies an astounding 2,567m down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The French Navy stumbled across the wreck in March 2025, south of Saint-Tropez, during a routine seabed mapping mission. When the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">drone&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> sonar picked up <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an unusually large<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> structure, the curious operators sent down a remotely operated vehicle to investigate. What it captured was incredible &#8212; the remains of a wooden ship that has laid untouched for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The wreck, now called Camarat 4, is a Renaissance merchant vessel, roughly 30 meters long by 7 meters wide. Experts believe it sailed from Italy, loaded with ceramics, cookware, and metal bars. Images show around 200 glazed ceramic jugs, 100 yellow plates, two cauldrons, and six cannons among the wreckage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many of the jugs bear the monogram<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">IHS<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">etched into them, the first letters of the Greek name for Jesus, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">or<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> are adorned with geometric and plant-based patterns. The detailing on the jugs suggests they came from the Liguria region in Italy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_105814\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105814\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105814\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/506453598_1228681362386269_1988712175652218816_n-e1749923440231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"537\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-105814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: National Navy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Frozen in time<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marine archaeologist Marine Sadania, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> part of the team leading the study, described the wreck as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">frozen in time.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Its <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">depth has kept it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> almost perfectly intact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, preventing looting of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0any of the items. As a result, it offers an incredibly rare window into Renaissance maritime trade and shipbuilding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This shipwreck now holds the record as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">France\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> deepest ever discovered, surpassing the previous title holder, the submarine <em>La Minerve<\/em>, found in 2019 at 2,300m down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Researchers plan <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to digitally map and study the wreck<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Using high-resolution photography,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> are building a complete 3D model of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">site<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that will<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> capture every detail,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">from<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the woodwork to the ceramic decorations.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Robotic arms will recover a few select objects to gain a fuller picture of life aboard the ship; the rest will remain in place.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deepest shipwreck ever found in French waters has been discovered in the Mediterranean off southern France.
