No one knew it existed until a tree fell over and exposed it. Carved into the slab of rock are <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a series of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ancient runes that archaeologists have been trying to decipher for years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The stone was found in 2018, and pictures of it were quickly sent to Ryan Primrose, the director of the Ontario Centre of Archaeological Education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt&#8217;s certainly among the least expected <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">finds<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that I think<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I&#8217;ve encountered during my career. It&#8217;s <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">absolutely<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fascinating,&#8221; he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Primrose was worried people would assume that the markings on the stone slab were created by Vikings, so he has been quietly working on the mystery for seven years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t want to release information publicly until we had done as much as we could <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at the time<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to understand exactly what it was,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106048\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106048\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106048\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Capturefghj-e1750633471261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"446\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-106048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Ryan Primrose<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The stone slab, about the size of a small tabletop, is half-buried in the rocky ground. From a distance, it looks as though it is covered in scratches. It is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">actually<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a series of 255 runes alongside an illustration of a boat and 16 further runic symbols that have been purposefully carved into the rock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Primrose decided to bring in runology expert Henrik Williams. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He flew over from Sweden and sat under a tarpaulin for three hours with a flashlight, looking at the runes.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0He <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">realized<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the symbols were Futhark alphabet runes, which were originally used in Scandinavia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A confusing timeline<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Etched into the bedrock is an early Swedish rune version of The Lord\u2019s Prayer. The prayer can be traced back to 1611. This initially caused confusion. There were no Swedes in the region at that time, so who could possibly have carved this into the rock? But the prayer was republished in the 19th century, and at that time, the Hudson\u2019s Bay Company did employ some Swedes. They had a trading post in Michipicoten, which is relatively close to the runes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106047\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106047\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106047\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Captureyuio-2-e1750633458213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"458\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-106047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Ryan Primrose<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is no way to know exactly how the carvings came to be, but Primrose and William reasonably think that someone working for the Hudson\u2019s Bay Company is responsible. Etching all 255 runes into the rock <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a task that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> would have taken days or weeks. Once created, they believe it might have been a central point for religious prayer or for Swedes to come together.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This timeline means that the stone is much newer than many would assume. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Researchers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">estimate that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it was carved around 1800.
