Streaks of reflected light from satellites are ruining space telescope images all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The problem stems from the explosion of satellite megaconstellations <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being launched<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> into orbit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Until now, most light pollution came from cities and vehicles,\u201d says Alejandro Borlaff of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09759-5\">NASA<\/a>. &#8220;[Now] telecommunication satellite constellations is rapidly affecting astronomical observatories worldwide<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110783\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110783\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110783\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-12-014931-e1765504380269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"793\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-110783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph detailing the projected impact of a growing number of satellites. Companies such as SpaceX, OneWeb, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amazon<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and others have plans to launch hundreds of thousands of small satellites into low orbit over the next decade. Currently, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">more than 15,000 satellites orbit the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Earth, up from 2,000 just a few years ago. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that number could <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">balloon<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to more than half a million by the late 2030s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These satellites are already a problem. Long-exposure images at twilight or dawn is the ideal way to capture faint cosmic objects. But bright satellite trails now routinely mar <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the field of view, affecting astronomers&#8217; ability to collect<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> data.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Space telescopes also affected<\/h2>\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t limited to telescopes on Earth. Even telescopes in space, including the Hubble Space Telescope, are not immune to this form of light pollution. Up to 33 percent of Hubble\u2019s images could be contaminated with streaks by the mid-2030s if these satellite megaconstellations expand as planned. Others could see more than 95 percent of their exposures affected.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110781\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110781\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110781\" src=\"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-12-015022-e1765504406792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-110781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A contaminated Hubble space telescope exposure simulation. Image: NASA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a satellite crosses a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">telescope\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> field of view, the reflected sunlight creates a bright line or<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">photobomb<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">across the image. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs telescopes stare at the Universe attempting to unveil distant galaxies, planets, and asteroids, satellites sometimes cross in front of the cameras, leaving bright traces of light that erase the dim signal that we receive from the cosmos,\u201d said Borlaff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last year, the International Astronomical Union Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">issued<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a series of recommendations for satellite companies <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to help protect<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> our view of space.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Their proposals include making the satellites less reflective and adjusting orbits to minimize the times when they<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0cross busy observation zones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Streaks of light from satellites are ruining space images.
