{"id":110809,"date":"2025-12-13T11:11:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T11:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/?p=110809"},"modified":"2025-12-13T13:58:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T13:58:56","slug":"archaeologists-find-2000-year-old-pleasure-barge-in-egypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorersweb.com\/archaeologists-find-2000-year-old-pleasure-barge-in-egypt\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaeologists Find 2,000-Year-Old Pleasure Barge in Egypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Divers have uncovered an ancient pleasure barge near the now-submerged island of Antirhodos, in Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Greek philosopher Strabo wrote about these pleasure boats when he visited Antirhodos from 29 to 25 BCE:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These vessels are luxuriously fitted out and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are used<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by the royal court for excursions, and by crowds of revelers who set off from Alexandria across the canal to the public festivals,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Day and night, the boats are full of people playing the flute and dancing uninhibitedly and with great abandon<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Several earthquakes and the rise in sea level over the centuries have since submerged Antirhodos. It is now roughly seven meters underwater, beneath a layer of sediment. There, divers from the European Institute of Underwater Archaeology spotted the remains of a well-preserved ship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At first, they believed the timbers came from two separate ships. Image: Franck Goddio\/IEASM<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Built for sheltered waters<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> extremely exciting because <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the first time <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ever<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that such a boat has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been discovered<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Egypt,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">study lead Franck Goddio told <em>The <\/em><\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Guardian<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">28 meters long and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">7<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> meters wide, with a rounded stern and flat bottom, researchers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">think<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">built<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for sheltered waters, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the open ocean.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Propelled by up to 20 rowers, its shape suggests <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the boat made<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> leisurely voyages along canals and rivers. Its width would have allowed it to have a central pavilion or cabin for elite passengers. Greek inscriptions carved into the wood, likely by those who worked on or traveled aboard the barge, point to its Alexandrian origins. Image: Christoph Gerigk\/Franck Goddio\/Hilti Foundation.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Researchers have suggested <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one other<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> use of the vessel, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">based on its location.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The wreck is relatively close to the remains of the Temple of Isis. Goddio and his team think it might not have solely been a pleasure barge, but took part in religious festivals linked to the goddess.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The wreck will remain on the seabed under UNESCO preservation guidelines.
