Robbie Phillips first rappelled down the schist wall that would produce What We Do in the Shadows<\/em> (E10 7a or 5.14b<\/a>) in August 2020. The short film of the same name zooms in and out a lot, but it maintains the same focal point that Phillips did for two years: a section of rock about the size of a parking space.<\/p>\n

The film opens on Phillips\u2019 care-free attitude. He cranks out dirtbag clich\u00e9s like hotcakes, but somehow makes each one stick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can commit to a scary runout, but not to a stable job.\u201d
\n\u201cLife is for livin\u2019. Climb now, work later. I\u2019ll deal with the real-life shit when it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phillips\u2019 candor strikes an unusual balance between massively psyched and totally mellow. Early on, he imitates a primordial Chris Sharma scream in what his mom would probably call his inside voice.<\/p>\n

The video follows suit; gentle music often accompanies footage of steep climbing on gnarly, tiny holds<\/a>.<\/p>\n
